How would you celebrate your 71st wedding anniversary?

This month at our Surrey care home, Kings Lodge, we had the great pleasure of hosting a vow renewal ceremony for our esteemed resident, Fred, and his beautiful wife, Monica, to celebrate their 71 year wedding anniversary...

Fred and Monica’s Wedding Day

An incredible achievement, the pair who married in their twenties are now 96 and 92, respectively. They originally tied the knot in Woking, Surrey in 1950, and then went on to have a child together.

They enjoyed a long and happy life together, and then in 2018 Fred moved into our Surrey care home. The couple remained as devoted as the day they married, but were sadly separated last year due to the Covid-19 Pandemic.

Celebrating Their Anniversary

With the couple now reunited, and their 71st wedding anniversary on the horizon, we wanted to help mark the occasion in an incredibly special way. It’s an extraordinary milestone to have reached, and even more pertinent with them having been apart throughout lockdown. So, we arranged for the delighted couple to remarry in a beautiful vow renewal ceremony.

Our Head of Hospitality and Communications, Shaleeza Hasham, said: "We couldn't believe it when we heard that Fred and Monica were soon to celebrate their 71st wedding anniversary! Not many couples reach this milestone, and we are told they are still just as in love as the day they married. Their relationship inspires everyone who sees them together - from the care staff to other residents in the home. Unfortunately, due to Monica living separately from Fred's care home, they have been separated by the COVID-19 pandemic in recent months, which was understandably very difficult for them. Thankfully, they are now able to see each other again a couple of times a week."

Planning Their Vow Renewal Ceremony

Wanting to honour their love and perseverance, and with the blessing of their family, we reached out to the local parish - St Mary's Church in Byfleet - and were able to secure Reverend John McCabe to perform the ceremony, which took place on the lawn of our Kings Lodge Surrey care home.

Monica was treated to hair and make-up upon arrival at our care home and was dressed in a stunning blue outfit, whilst Fred’s walker was decorated with red roses to match her bouquet.

The pair then renewed their vows with their family members in attendance, and our other residents looking on from a careful distance.

Among the special (socially distanced) guests were the couple's proud daughter, Sarah (who celebrated her 43rd wedding anniversary on the same day), and Monica’s sister, Sue North, who was a bridesmaid at their first wedding all those years ago!

Celebrating the Milestone Occasion

The flowers were provided by the local florist, a cake made by a member of the local community, guest seating provided by the local school, and Morrisons Weybridge also generously donated a cake and decorations as part of their Community Champion project; it was wonderful to see the community come together to make it such a memorable day for Fred and Monica.

Following the ceremony, which saw Fred and Monica walk down the aisle to their favourite musical artist, Andre Rieu, the besotted pair participated in a romantic post-vow-renewal wedding shoot, allowing them to update their wedding photos whilst preserving memories of the special day.

Fred then surprised Monica with a heartfelt gift; homegrown flowers and a necklace with preserved roses inside to mark their eternal love.

A buffet banquet for the bride and groom, as well as their cherished guests, rounded off a heart-warming day.

Catching Up With the Happy Couple

Sharing the secret to a long-lasting marriage, Fred Cobbett said: “Monica and I have been married for over seven decades, and we have never once run out of things to talk about. I know I can sit down and natter with her about anything, any time, any place. She is my best friend and confidante. I treasure every single one of my 71 years married to her, and greatly look forward to what’s yet to come.”

Discussing the vow renewals, Monica added: “This is a milestone anniversary and one in which many people are not lucky enough to reach. I'm delighted to have been able to re-marry the love of my life and I cannot thank Kings Lodge staff enough for letting us relive the most important day of our lives.”

It was an honour to help Fred and Monica celebrate their milestone anniversary and, here at our Surrey care home, we’re delighted that they got to enjoy such a wonderful day together.
