Have you heard about our Adopt a Grandparent campaign?

We set up the initiative as a way to help combat loneliness in our local community and beyond. So far, it's helped to create hundreds of intergenerational friendships, providing a feeling of comfort for both the young and old.

Intergenerational relationships can help to bridge the gap between the different ideas, values and opinions of people from different eras. This can also combat loneliness and improve mental health.

We're excited to announce Adopt a Grandparent’s partnership with Facebook, and how it will help to combat loneliness globally:

How Adopt a Grandparent Works to Combat Loneliness

At CHD Living, we decided it was about time that we took a step towards combatting loneliness amongst the elderly and the wider community. In October 2019, the idea of Adopt a Grandparent took hold, and we set about pairing young people in the community with their new 'grandparents'.

During the first COVID-19 lockdown, we moved the initiative online. This meant that during an isolating time, our residents and young people could stay connected.

The importance of the campaign during lockdown was immeasurable. It served to combat loneliness and improve mental health for many.

When we went online, word spread - and before long, we had almost 90,000 people sign up across the globe. The BBC aired a segment about the campaign on The One Show, which led to a further rise in volunteers. Adopt a Grandparent has also partnered with celebrities, The Duke of Edinburgh's Award, NetApp Public Sector and Barclays UK. With so many volunteers signing up, we had to adapt our processing system and find a way to accommodate the thousands of connections.

We're thrilled to announce that our latest partnership is with Facebook. So far, they've been actively promoting and advertising the initiative across their platforms.

Partnering With Facebook to Combat Loneliness

Facebook created a video and post as part of their #CommunityVoices campaign to promote Adopt a Grandparent.

They now post regular updates and adverts to raise awareness of the campaign. Facebook Portal and WhatsApp enable our volunteers to connect with their grandparents on a regular basis. The platforms are easy to use, making it simple for the older generations to stay connected.

Facebook’s post reads: “People in the UK are forming beautiful new connections with a little help from Facebook Portal and WhatsApp. During the pandemic, CHD Living noticed that their residents were feeling lonelier, so they took their Adopt a Grandparent scheme online.

After pairing their residents with volunteers found through Facebook and Instagram, CHD Living provided each of their care homes with a Facebook Portal, so that volunteers could virtually chat with their new 'adopted' grandparents. Today, almost 90,000 people have signed up to help share some happiness together. #CommunityVoices.

Accompanying the post is a video, and they’ve also been sharing pictures of ‘grandparents’ on a video call with their ‘adopted grandchildren.’

Facebook has a global reach, and so the heart-warming posts are being shared across the world, which will help to combat loneliness.
