Have you ever been to a silent rave?

This month, we treated our residents at Crest Lodge to a disco with a difference!

Listening to music is a wonderful way for our residents to socialise, have fun and create special memories.

So, we organised a silent rave for them to experience the joy of music in a new way. Here, we’re sharing the benefits of music therapy for older adults:

The Benefits of Music: Improving Social, Mental and Physical Wellbeing

The benefits of music are endless. Listening to music releases mood-enhancing chemicals to your brain that can help to reduce stress and boost happiness.

Music also encourages the body to move, ultimately helping to improve physical fitness. Dancing can help maintain strength and agility whilst also boosting balance and coordination.

Has a particular song ever taken you back to a certain time in your life? Many of us associate music with life events - and for older adults, this can invite feelings of comfort and happiness.

Listening to songs can help you to be present in the moment and forget any stresses, worries or negative thoughts. It can also promote productivity and encourage creativity.

For these reasons and more, music is an important part of our residents’ lives and we encourage them to listen to music on a regular basis.

The Benefits of Music: Organising a Silent Rave

Now that we’re coming out the other side of the COVID-19 pandemic, we’ve been working hard to boost morale and help our residents regain some normality in their lives.

We decided to organise a silent rave to help put a smile on their faces. Residents donned their headphones and danced along to ‘80s classics. Some of the residents who were in attendance are receiving care for special conditions such as brain injuries.

The rave proved to be successful in boosting morale and encouraging our residents at Crest Lodge to be more active. We now plan to organise silent raves across our other care services.

Enjoying the Disco With a Difference

Our residents enjoyed feeling the effects of the benefits of music in a new way and are excited to attend another silent rave in the future.

Discussing the event, one of our participating residents, Kirsty, said: “I had the most amazing time singing the night away at the silent rave. My favourite part of the evening was when I removed my headphones and could see my friends and other residents singing and grooving in what appeared to be a completely silent hall! It put a smile on my face, and I would love to go to similar events like these in the future.”

Shaleeza, our Head of Hospitality and Communications, said: “We’re always looking for fun new activities for residents and, as something few of them will have experienced before, a ‘silent rave’ seemed the perfect way to stimulate and entertain, whilst also delivering numerous health benefits.

“With high levels of participation and residents commenting how much they enjoyed themselves, the event was a great success. So much so that we are now looking to host similar sessions across our other care homes.”
