As the weather begins to heat up, are you starting to organise more summer family meals?


Here at CHD, we focus on family values, and are always thinking about different ways we can connect our residents with their loved ones to help create happiness for them daily. 


Meal times are often at the centre of family get-togethers; cooking, eating and sharing stories over the dinner table is a wonderful way for families to bond and spend quality time together.


Throughout the summer months, you may be planning more BBQ’s; in this blog, we’re sharing 8 recipes to help shake up your summer family meals:

Summer Family Meals: Family BBQ

Summer Family Meals: Sweet and Spicy Vegetable Skewers Vegetable skewers offer a chance to get creative with textures and flavours, and the whole family can get involved in making up a selection of them to cook on the BBQ. 


Choose from a range of different vegetables, such as onion, aubergine and peppers, and experiment with herbs, spices and sauces, for an assortment of delicious kebabs. 


This recipe uses a variety of vegetables, such as mushrooms and courgettes, with an added twist: peach. The fruit adds a sweeter flavour, balanced with a punchy sprinkling of chilli flakes. 


As these kebabs are adaptable, they’re great for sharing with the whole family; you can make a variety of skewers with different flavours and textures to suit everyone.

BBQ Sweet Potatoes BBQ’s are a great way to bring the family together to have fun and make happy memories. To get creative with your BBQ meals though, why not try this sweet potato recipe?


Cooking sweet potatoes on the barbecue, drizzled in BBQ sauce, gives them a unique, smoky flavour, which balances perfectly with their sweet taste.


Why not fill them with soft cheese and vegetables, or enjoy them on the side with a selection of our other BBQ recipes?

What’s a family BBQ without a delicious homemade coleslaw or potato salad


Opting for vegetarian dishes doesn’t mean you have to miss out; simply substitute the dairy products for a vegan alternative to ensure you can still enjoy your BBQ favourites.


If you’re attending a family BBQ, these are great to pop in containers and take along with you as a contribution to the meal.

If you’d still like to keep your BBQ classics on the menu, why not create a vegetable burger as an alternative?


Don’t be afraid to stray from the recipe and try a range of other ingredients. Why not try adding some chopped chilli to this vegetable burger recipe to give it a little kick? Packed with kale and quinoa, this recipe offers a healthy dose of protein and vitamin C. 


If you have younger members of the family joining the BBQ, why not invite them to help you prepare the vegetable burgers, as a sweet way to bond and spend quality time together?

Smoky Miso Aubergines

Aubergines are a staple vegetarian dish as they’re filling, delicious and versatile. Their chunky texture makes them a great meat substitute.


We love this smoky miso aubergine recipe, which is topped with a delicious drizzle for a punch of flavour. They make a unique and delicious BBQ meal that is sure to become a family favourite.

Summer Family Meals: Barbecued Fruit

There’s no need to end the BBQ before dessert! Cooked fruit, such as banana or pineapple, is a delicious way to finish the meal. Why not try this simple grilled peach with cinnamon sugar butter dish?


Alternatively, to make a banana split, simply slice down the middle of a banana, being careful to avoid cutting all the way through. Slot some vegan chocolate buttons in the centre, wrap in foil, and place on the BBQ. Once cooked, you can add a refreshing dollop of vegan ice cream and sprinkle it lightly with cocoa powder.

Summer Family Meals: Vegan Brownies

For an indulgent dessert, we recommend trying this delicious vegan skillet brownie recipe. It’s simple to make, will be popular among your loved ones, and you can easily adapt it to suit your personal preference by using different nuts and/or fruit.


This gloriously fudgy vegan skillet brownie is the perfect way to round off your BBQ with your family this summer; why not serve with a dollop of Greek yoghurt or vegan ice cream, and a sprinkling of chopped nuts?
