4 Best Stress Management Techniques For When Your Loved One Needs Care at Home

Less than a minute read
Is your loved one receiving care at home?

If you've had to make adjustments to your home and lifestyle due to care arrangements, you may be feeling a little stressed and overwhelmed.

Most of us will feel stress in our lives, but it's how we deal with it that matters. This week, we’re taking a look at 4 stress management techniques to help you cope:

Stress Management Techniques: Take Time Out for Yourself

Take Time Out For Yourself

One of our top stress management techniques is to look after yourself, first and foremost.

Investing time in yourself can help to reduce your stress levels and improve your mental wellbeing. Self-care can come in a variety of forms; a hot bubbly bath or a massage or meditation, to name a few.

Taking yourself out of the situation to relax, pamper yourself, and re-energise your body and mind is essential for reducing your stress levels.

You could indulge in self-care for 20 minutes a day, an hour a week, or a day per month; find something that works for you and incorporate it into your routine.

Stress Management Techniques: Regular Exercise
Exercise is a great way to relieve stress. Concentrating on your workout routine can help take your mind off things; by clearing your mind, you can come back to it at a later date with a fresh perspective.

Exercise also releases endorphins that reduce stress and help you to feel good about yourself. You’ll feel physically well, too.

When you’re feeling stressed, it can be easy to retreat to the sofa. Why not incorporate exercise into your daily routine to get you moving more?

Stress Management Techniques: Talking Therapy

When your loved one needs care at home, there are lots of things to think about. Talking is a great way to unravel the web of thoughts in your mind, and it can feel good to get things off your chest. Confiding in others can help you to get to the root of your stress and even find some solutions.

You can talk to a professional, a friend or someone who is in a similar position to you. Talking it through can help to alleviate the stress, and you may feel much better for sharing your thoughts.

The person you speak to may offer a sympathetic ear or some helpful advice; either way, you may just find it comforting to offload.

Try Guided Meditation to Relieve Stress

Guided meditation can help you to relax and unwind when you’re feeling stressed. The aim is to clear your mind and learn how to manage your thought processes.

Often, during meditation, your mind will wander. You’ll be told to acknowledge the thought, accept it, and then let it go and bring your mind back to your breathing. This helps you to manage your stress by learning to let go of your worries.

Clearing your mind helps to stand you in good stead for facing life's challenges.

You’ll focus on your breathing, taking deep breaths in and out. Paying attention to your breaths as you fill your lungs up with fresh air helps to distract you from other goings-on and encourages you to stay present.

You can then apply this to your everyday life; when you feel stressed, take some time out to practise your deep breathing techniques.
