5 Ways to Improve Mental Health | Effective Methods For Boosting Your Mood

01 July, 2022  ·  Less than a minute read

If you’re looking for ways to boost your mood, then we can help.

Here at CHD Living, our ethos is to ‘Create Happiness Daily’ - and we strive to achieve just that. From organising memorable bucket list wishes for our residents, to enabling them to live as independently as possible, we're always searching for new ways to ensure they’re living their best lives.

In this blog, we’re sharing 5 effective ways to improve mental health, to help you at home:

Ways to Improve Mental Health: Set Yourself a Series of Goals

Having something to work towards can provide you with a sense of purpose and ambition. You can set yourself small, daily targets, or larger goals that you need to focus on, such as completing a project or learning a new skill.

Putting your efforts into achieving a goal that means a lot to you will help to boost your mood, whilst fulfilling them will instil a sense of pride and accomplishment.

You could plan a trip you've been dreaming about, learn a new language or redesign your garden.

However big or small, your goal is personal to you, and achieving it can help to boost your mental wellbeing.

Improve Your Sleep Pattern

Lack of sleep is often associated with low mood. Breaking the cycle and working on your sleeping habits can improve how you feel on a daily basis and reduce the risk of various health conditions, such as stress.

Spending time outdoors, exercising and socialising can all contribute to a better night’s sleep, as you’ll be spending your energy in a positive way.

Reducing your caffeine and alcohol intake, especially before bedtime, can help you to sleep better.

Ensuring your room is free of distractions can help you settle down for a comfortable sleep. You could try limiting screen exposure before you go to bed; why not read a book?

You could also use lavender to help promote a restful night’s sleep, as well as making sure your room is a clean and comfortable space. Try implementing a regular sleep/wake cycle, too, in line with your personal needs. All of this can help to improve your sleeping habits, reducing feelings of sluggishness and helping to improve mental health.

Ways to Improve Mental Health: Look After Your Body

Looking after your body is essential when it comes to improving mental health. You can do this by making sure that you take part in adequate exercise each day; try going for a gentle walk, an exercise class, or an evening swimming session. By exercising regularly, you’ll help improve your body’s strength, boosting your confidence and improving your quality of life.

Another effective way to look after your body is to nourish it with healthy, nutritious food. This  can improve your productivity and motivation, as well as help you to feel good.

By ensuring you eat well and move more, you’ll help to enhance your overall well being, which is an effective way to improve mental health.

Find Fun New Ways to Socialise

Spending time with others can help to boost your mood, helping to reduce feelings of loneliness. It’s a good idea to arrange plenty of quality time with your friends and family, but you might also enjoy making new friends.

Meeting new people can introduce you to new ideas, cultures and values, and offer new experiences.

You can make new friends by signing up for new hobbies, joining a club, or, if you have an allotment, you could strike up a conversation with neighbouring plot-holders. You’ll have plenty in common to lay the foundations of a good friendship; why not invite your new acquaintances to a BBQ or dinner party?

Ways to Improve Mental Health: Practise Gratitude

When you’re feeling low, you may find that one of the most effective ways to improve your mental health is to take a look at all the things you’re grateful for in your life.

This could be having a roof over your head, food on the table, a loving family, or the opportunity to make new friends. It could even be as simple as feeling grateful for your garden blooming well this year.

Keep a journal, listing five things you’re grateful for each day, to help you find the joy in the little details and appreciate what you have. When you feel your mood dipping, you can use this as a method of reflection.
